Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.

Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.

US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.

The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.

“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”

Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency

But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.

It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.

‘Popular target’

The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.

“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.

“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”

Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.

“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.

“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”

A man was arrested for allegedly using Viagra to get the attention of a Mexican citizen over the Internet.

Michael J. Nast of the Santa Rosa/San Juan Beach Area Police Department responded to a call for a report of an "Internet connection" being broken.

A man was arrested and taken into custody.

Nast was also charged with dealing with counterfeit goods and selling goods under the false name of "Viagra" or "Sildenafil."

According to police, a man named "Pau" was arrested and charged.

"We are dealing with a criminal element," said Captain Cervino Rios.

"It is very much a criminal element, but we are dealing with a criminal element."

A San Juan County police detective said the man who was arrested was arrested and charged with dealing with counterfeit goods.

Rios said he did not see the man for about 6 hours at the time of the arrest.

He said he was also taking a medication known as "Sildenafil" that he bought on the Internet from a seller of the product.

Rios said the man was not arrested for selling counterfeit drugs or selling an unapproved product.

"They did not have any evidence to support this element," he said.

Rios said the man was "taking a prescription medicine that was not approved by the FDA."

A search of the man's computer was underway. Officers found a list of over-the-counter drugs he purchased from a seller of the product.

Rios said he did not know if the man bought the pills for his own use or if anyone else purchased the products from the seller.

"We did not know who bought the pills, who sold the pills to us," he said.

Rios said the seller also bought a number of products with a street address on them. The man was arrested and charged.

The man was taken to a local emergency room for an operation that lasted several hours.

He is scheduled to appear in court on February 23.

Rios said he believes the man was arrested because he sold the fake Viagra to a "consul."

"There is no evidence to suggest a conspiracy," he said.

The police believe that the man bought the drugs and then ran into a woman in her 20s.

Rios said he also believes the man bought the drugs and then ran into the woman.

Rios said he did not believe the man was the culprit.

"I would not be able to tell you if they were involved or not, but I don't know why," he said.

Rios said the man did not come forward with any evidence to indicate a conspiracy.

Rios said the man did not know what the woman was doing.

"I do not believe that the man was in her 20s," he said.

Rios said he did not know if the man was doing anything.

"We do not have any evidence to suggest that he was doing anything," he said.

Rios said he believed the man was selling the pills to a seller of the product.

"They were doing a street search and they found some pills that were not approved for sale at the time," he said.

How Does It Work?

The active ingredient in Viagra is Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra is Cialis and it belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. They work by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing blood flow to specific areas of the body. This increases the sensitivity of your muscles and allows them to relax and improve your erections.

These medicines work by increasing blood flow to the penis when you are sexually stimulated. The increased blood flow helps men with erectile dysfunction (ED) to achieve and maintain an erection.

It is important to note that Viagra is only approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a treatment for ED, and not for the prevention of heart attack, stroke or other heart conditions.

Viagra is a prescription medicine. It is safe for most men to take if they are taking Viagra or a PDE5 inhibitor. Viagra does not cure erectile dysfunction. It only helps to improve blood flow to your penis when you are sexually stimulated.

How to Take it?

Viagra and Sildenafil are both safe for most men. Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) should take Viagra with a glass of water or a meal. You can take Viagra with or without food.

Viagra works by helping the blood vessels to relax, allowing more blood to flow into the penis. This helps to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually aroused. Sildenafil works by increasing the amount of blood the body makes during sexual activity, helping to improve your ability to get and keep an erection when you are sexually stimulated.
